The Statue of Liberty, conceived by the French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who had help from Gustave Eiffel on the metal framework in its lifted arm, was dedicated in 1886 and has since become a symbol of immigration, freedom, protest, and America itself. This exhibition traces the majesty and meanings of the statue through 100 works by more than 70 artists. Among the objects on view is a small-scale bronze version Bartholdi made in his lifetime and an 1885 Tiffany trophy in silver, gold, and petrified wood. Henry Yuzuru Sugimoto’s 1965 painting of Japanese American internment protesters is also here. —Elena Clavarino
