John Singer Sargent’s love of Spain, and the art he created there, was the subject of a recent exhibition at London’s National Gallery. And his society portraits keep him ever in the public eye. But did you know he had a sister, Emily, who was also an artist. She had little artistic training yet painted whimsical landscapes in watercolor, capturing the wonders of her travels: bazaars in Egypt, pastures in Italy, and the minarets of Constantinople. Despite their beauty, most of her works have remained unseen, kept in the Sargent family collection until recent bequests to six institutions. In this riveting show, Emily’s watercolors are shown alongside the art of her brother and their uncle Winthrop Sargent. She was more than just Sargent’s sister. —Elena Clavarino
