In Jane Austen’s 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Darcy is described as arrogant and aloof. In the 2005 film, however, Mathew Macfayden presents Darcy as shy and socially awkward, sensitivity he covers with coldness. Perhaps these portrayals represent the differences in audiences separated by 200 years, and what these audiences will accept in a character. In the city of Bath, which is mentioned in all of Austen’s novels, the Holbourne Museum is hosting the exhibition “Illustrating Austen.” It explores the way Austen’s characters have been pictured over time for new generations of readers. The show celebrates the 250th anniversary of Austen’s birth. —Hannah Gross
