Edmondo Bacci: Energy and Light

Edmondo Bacci, Avvenimento #247, 1956.

Apr 1 – Sept 18, 2023
Dorsoduro, 701-704, 30123 Venezia VE, Italy

Edmondo Bacci was a member of the Movimento Spaziale (Spacialism), founded by the prolific Lucio Fontana. The group’s manifesto repudiated the illusion of space that was a goal of traditional painting, and vowed to synthesize color, sound, depth, and movement into a new art form, one that was more relevant to a world that had been ravaged by war. Venetian by birth, Bacci attracted attention from art critics and collectors, including Peggy Guggenheim in the 1950s. She called him “the mysterious little man. But his paintings, that is another matter. . . . They are the atomic bomb on canvas. They burst with light energy and color.” This comprehensive retrospective of Bacci also celebrates Venice, the city in which he worked. —Elena Clavarino
