Do Hu Suh: 348 West 22nd Street

Apr 1 – May 16, 2021

“I see life as a passageway, with no fixed beginning or destination,” the Korean artist Do Ho Suh said in 2017. “We tend to focus on the destination all the time and forget about the in-between spaces.” With sheets of colorful, transparent polyester placed upon fine steel frames, Suh recreates those transitory spaces—places he once called home in Seoul, Providence, London, and Berlin. Now he’s added his former Manhattan apartment (at 348 West 22nd Street, to be exact) to his oeuvre. What is the subject of these modernist mirages? Displacement both psychological and cultural. Memory and déjà vu. —E.C.
