The Democratic Republic of the Congo sits at the center of sub-Saharan Africa. It’s at the center of the African arts landscape, too. Since antiquity, artistic creation in the Congo has been rich, an important African heritage. “Congo as Fiction” mixes the objects and photographs of Western outsiders—beginning with pieces from the art anthropologist Hans Himmelheber, who traveled in the Congo in 1938-39—with works by Congolese contemporary artists. Preconceived Western views of the country will be challenged. —E.C.
