A World In Common: Contemporary African Photography

Atong Atem, Dit, 2015.

Feb 1 – May 7, 2025
Hardenbergstraße 22-24, 10623 Berlin, Germany

In recent decades, the visuals emerging from Africa have often been shaped by negative stereotypes. The early internet was flooded with pictures of bloated Ethiopian children or women walking miles with water jugs balanced on their heads—images that reinforced a Western-centric worldview. This exhibition in Berlin presents a different view. Inspired by the Cameroonian scholar Achille Mbembe, it follow his philosophy of imagining “a world in common” by “thinking the world from Africa.” Photographs from the 1950s and 60s capture that era of independence movements, others showcase stylish women in vibrant dresses, and still more reflect on the continent’s climate crisis. Works by Hassan Hajjaj, Aïda Muluneh, Atong Atem, and many more will be on view. —Elena Clavarino
