In 1995, the writer and activist Pearl Cleage premiered Blues for an Alabama Sky, the second of three plays she wrote while working with the Alliance Theatre. Set in 1930s New York, it places us in the Harlem Renaissance just as the Great Depression is beginning to pressure the population. Angel and her friends, all artists and writers, fight to keep creating new work while threatened by the economic downturn. Lynette Linton directs the U.K. revival of Cleage’s play, which marks as well the U.K. stage debut of Samira Wiley (The Handmaid’s Tale, Orange Is the New Black). —Jensen Davis
