It’s not every day that activists on the front lines of change are also the ones documenting that change. Promoting black nationalist beauty principles, Kwame Brathwaite, an activist and photographer, was not only a major voice in the 1960s Black is Beautiful movement, he simultaneously immortalized it with his lens. —J.V.
