Growing up in Hong Kong, Trevor Yeung watched fish and crustaceans drift through the tanks at his father’s seafood restaurant, and then started keeping his own at home. He was also drawn to pet shops and feng shui arrangements. “I learned how important it was to provide the right conditions to sustain life,” he later told Art Basel magazine. Yeung’s Hong Kong studio is clad with plants—palms, shrubs, trees. “Being aware of this power started to shape me.” At M+, fishless aquariums take over the gallery, standing in for longing, desire, and the strange power we hold over aquatic life, as well as its hold on us. —Elena Clavarino
