Celebrate the 150th birthday of the English illustrator Aubrey Beardsley, born in 1872, at America’s oldest society for bibliophiles, The Grolier Club. Though Beardsley’s life was cut short by tuberculosis—he died at 25—his influence was immense, not just in the world of art but in publishing. Inspired by Japanese woodcuts, Beardsley worked in flourishes of black ink, creating swooping visual dances between positive and negative space, and suggesting decadence with the lightest touch. Along with Oscar Wilde, Beardsley was a leading figure of the Aesthetic Movement, and he was monumental in the development of Art Nouveau. —Clara Molot
