Afrosurf

When you think of surfing, Hawaii comes to mind. So does Mexico, its western coast a mecca for surfer dudes; and California, thanks to Mavericks; and Portugal, home to the world’s biggest wave. But Africa? Not so much. That is unless you’ve seen The Endless Summer, in which case you know that the continent has some killer waves. Pairing images from African photographers with more than 50 essays, Afrosurf is a vibrant picture of African surf culture, which includes kids, professionals, and everyone in between in Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Angola, Ghana, Mozambique, the Republic of Congo, Nigeria, and South Africa. One-hundred percent of proceeds from the book go to the support of two African surf-therapy organizations: Waves for Change and Surfers Not Street Children. —J.V.
