When the MacArthur Foundation bestowed a “genius” grant on Kyle Abraham in 2013, it seemed a bit premature. A year later, after two richly contextual, extraordinarily textured evening-length premieres, it felt entirely earned. This short West Coast tour for Abraham’s chamber ensemble revives a chunk of that early triumph. The Gettin’ integrates conceptual artist Glenn Ligon’s evocative set and Grammy-winning jazz composer Robert Glasper’s riff on Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite with vital, mercurial dances. The tour also reprises the aptly titled If We Were a Love Song, to Nina Simone in lyrical mode. Abraham has a special way with romantic duets, which this 2021 piece offers in abundance. Finally, the choreographer’s latest: a gluey group entanglement—a hopeful vision of interdependency—to Shelley Washington’s score for two baritone saxophones. All three pieces reflect Abraham’s attunement to Black American music. —Apollinaire Scherr
