The Beach Sessions 2026: Alexa West

The Beach Sessions is the perfect name for this annual rite at summer’s end, a long, wind-whipping ferry ride from Manhattan: session for serious institutional bodies (court, psychoanalysis, schools of art); beach for when they play hooky. Over its 11-year tenure, the commissioned choreographers for the one-day outing have been dedicated experimentalists, which means they recognize the obstreperous gulls and indifferent beachgoers, creeping tide and inconstant sun, as part of the overall design. The environments that this year’s chosen, Alexa West, is in the practice of “treating as choreographic partners” are more likely to be made than found: galleries, not tidepools. West is a cofounder of Pageant. Anointed by The New York Times and now MoMA, this hot, young, East Williamsburg performance space is the artistic spawn of Sarah Michelson—same cool veneer, meticulous cultivation of ticky-tacky, and bright attention to performance as ritual torture or, for this Gen-Z cohort, spectacular compulsion. How will urbane anomie blend with sun and sand? Show up to find out. The performance is at six P.M. —Apollinaire Scherr

In a related event, MoMA presents the day-long Pageant Presents Pageant, on August 21, featuring works by the venue’s regulars. Details here.
