Mozart. A little boy in a white wig. A musical genius who completed more than 800 works yet died young, far too young, at 35. Americans now have the chance to see many of his personal objects, shipped from Salzburg for the first time, among them his clavichord and violin, letters, portraits, music manuscripts, and first editions. The exhibition highlights lesser-known aspects of his life, from his travels to his dependence on aristocratic patronage. “A man of ordinary talent will always be ordinary,” Mozart said, “whether he travels or not; but a man of superior talent will go to pieces if he remains forever in the same place.” —Elena Clavarino
