The late Winfred Rembert worked in the medium of leather, which he tooled and painted into scenes of the South. He was born in Georgia in 1945, and was nearly lynched in 1965, an event that was followed by a prison term of seven years. Rembert learned leatherwork in jail; upon release he began documenting his life in this medium. The paintings burst with energy, often achieving a state of harrowing abstraction. Jailhouse stripes, the seeming snowfall of cottonfields, bright billiard balls. The exhibition fills three floors and is a must see. —Laura Jacobs
