Michael Rakowitz, an Iraqi-Jewish conceptual artist, is known for recreating Ancient Assyrian sculptures and reliefs—not in limestone or basalt, but in cardboard and Middle Eastern food packaging. Many of his works confront the true cost of ongoing war in the Middle East. “With war comes destruction,” he has said, “the loss of thousands of years of human history.” At the Acropolis Museum, Rakowitz presents his work in dialogue with ancient Greek relics from the museum’s collection. In placing his works among these ancient fragments, Rakowitz asks: What happens to a culture when its art disappears? —Elena Clavarino
