White Columns, in its original 1970s form, inhabited the basement of a former rag factory on Greene Street in SoHo. Five decades later, the venerable art and culture space is now located on Horatio Street, near the Whitney. The gallery and arts space hosts an annual exhibition called “Looking Back,” in which an individual or collaborative team is invited to curate a show that reflects their own experiences with art during the previous 12 months. This year’s curator is Mary Manning, who says, “I primarily used love as a guiding metric to select these works, being aware of the messy hard work that comes with love and the rigorous emotional work that went into making these pieces.” —Sophie Kemp
