The multimedia artist Wangechi Mutu was born in Kenya in 1972, and since the beginning of her career has explored gender, race, and colonialism in her art. Mutu is interested in living beings and they way they interact. After flicking through her mother’s book on tropical diseases, Mutu began using grotesque textures in her work, finding the life force of these infections “visually interesting.” She addresses the imperfection of bodies, and separates beauty from hierarchy. Works made of earth and bronze are the focus of this show, which also includes Mutu’s newest film, My Cave Call. —Elena Clavarino
