While Surrealism is known as a defining movement of the 20th century, many of the female artists who were part of its rise have been overlooked by history. Those women pushed the boundaries of expression in the name of the unconscious, while also tapping into desire and eroticism. A new exhibition at Richard Saltoun Gallery presents a century of Surrealism, beginning with the female artists who helped lay the foundational groundwork, and then moving up to women who are today making Surrealist leaps into the unknown. —Maggie Turner
