Untitled: Art on the Conditions of Our Time

May 8 – July 11, 2021
Castle St, Cambridge CB3 0AQ, United Kingdom

Leaving a work untitled is a long-standing artistic strategy. It’s meant to coax viewers into focusing on what’s in front of their eyes, rather than leaning on cues from the artist. Drawing from this practice, 10 British African diaspora artists have chosen to do the same with their group exhibition. The show is an exploration of the Black British identity, and it includes painting, drawing, printmaking, and performance. “Instead of focusing on blackness ahead of the works themselves,” explains curator Paul Goodwin, “‘Untitled’ flips this order and focuses on the works first and foremost.” —E.C.
