Under the Skin: The Pleasure of Discomfort

A still from Gaspar Noé’s Under the Void.

Jan 29 – Feb 25, 2024
7 Ludlow St, New York, NY 10002, United States

The filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar is known for inventive, unlikely plots that communicate his honest view of the world. The Skin I Live In, the director’s take on horror, is no exception. A story about a mad plastic surgeon and his captive, about deception and appearances, it is unsettling. “Under the Skin,” a series at the Metrograph, focuses on films like Almodóvar’s, movies that capture the queasy, uncomfortable, and physically irritating aspects of life. Instead of telling viewers what to think and feel about questionable events, they leave them to make up their own minds. The agenda includes Fat Girl by Catherine Breillat, Humanity by Bruno Dumont, and Enter the Void by Gaspar Noé. —Jeanne Malle
