“The work exists in a vacuum of blackness,” the Harlem-born artist Tschabalala Self once said. Her art is painterly in its composition, but she doesn’t paint. Self assembles figures, usually Black women, from sewn, printed, and painted matter—a multimedia approach to the canvas. Each work comes at its subject from a slightly different angle, telling Self’s version of their story. —Elena Clavarino
