Tom Uttech was born in Merrill, Wisconsin, in 1942. He is an artist of the woods and the creatures that live in them. But he’s also something of a mystic, drawn to dusk and dawn, intent on catching the sentient silence of Northern American landscapes. Paintings that show the mirror reflection of a wood in a lake are like Op art abstractions. Images of birds in migration are a beguiling confetti of species—from great gray owls to Blackburnian warblers. The color palette, whether hot or cold, glows warm-blooded—and sometimes phantasmagoric. This solo exhibition is part of the Independent New York 2024 art fair. It features recent large-scale paintings inspired by his extended time in Quetico Park in Ontario and the North Woods of his native Wisconsin. —Laura Jacobs
