Nancy Holt (1938–2014) fearlessly embraced place and space, but she resisted the label “land artist,” preferring to be known as a “perception artist.” Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, Holt grew up in New Jersey and studied biology at Tufts University. Credited as a pioneer in the earth, land, and conceptual art movements, her interest in the natural sciences opened her mind to what art could be and where it could live. The earthwork Sun Tunnels (1973–76), for example, consists of four concrete tunnels arranged in Utah’s Great Basin Desert; they are aligned to frame sunrise and sunset during the summer and winter solstices. With drawings, collages, photographs, and sculptures, “Echoes & Evolutions” investigates the methodical process behind Holt’s Sun Tunnels, and by extension, her unique and important practice. —Alexandra Lemer
