Tokyo: Art and Photography

July 29, 2021 – Jan 3, 2022

Beginning in the early 1600s, when Tokyo was the headquarters for the Tokugawa shoguns, and then time traveling 400 years to today, a new exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum presents four centuries of art and photography focused on the city whose name means “East Capital”—Tokyo! Edo period woodblock prints. Folding screens from the Kanō school of painting. Communist art of the early 1900s. The Meiji period of Western influence. The creative explosion of the 1960s. Millennial postmodernism and pop. It’s all here—mighty and dynamic. —E.C.
