Winning attention in the 1990s, Tim Walker was a photographer who conjured elaborate, fantastical shoots staged with over-the-top sets and improbable props. Since then, he has photographed everyone from Lady Gaga and Frank Ocean to Chappell Roan, Hunter Schafer, and Miriam Margolyes. For this exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, Walker spent five years photographing queer activists, performers, artists, and writers. His theme is “Fairyland,” with its intonations of both Victoriana and the flora and fauna of contemporary queerdom. The result is a celebration of queer identity and community embodied in Walker’s unmistakable style: vivid, inventive, and not remotely interested in subtlety. “Your difference is your power,” Walker has said. “It is a precious and beautiful thing.” —Elena Clavarino
