Fabric Matrons

Cindy Sherman, Untitled #710.

23 Savile Row, Mayfair, London W1S 2ET, United Kingdom

Cindy Sherman, the groundbreaking artist who has spent five decades challenging stereotypes of femininity, returns to Hauser & Wirth with “Fabric Matrons,” a new photographic series that confronts fashion’s obsession with youth and perfection. Drawing on Chanel’s archives, Sherman uses luxurious fabrics, costume jewelry, wigs, and makeup to create larger-than-life characters that expose how women construct, and are constrained by, their public identities. “At this point, with each subsequent body of work I do, I will continue to be forced to reckon with the ageing of my body,” Sherman tells British Vogue. “As technology gets better and better, higher resolution shows more imperfections. One can watch oneself age while in the camera’s eye.” With her usual mix of satire and self-awareness, Sherman takes aim at the pressure on women to conceal aging while celebrating the freedom that comes with it. “I felt more pressure, perhaps from being older, and I had to acknowledge my own insecurities until I was free to experiment with the old biddies living inside of me,” Sherman said. “Fashion and wrinkles don’t easily mix.” In “Fabric Matrons,” Sherman proves that they can. The problem lies not with the wrinkles but with the culture that tells women to be ashamed of them. —Clara Scholl
