Whenever and wherever it is performed, Bronislava Nijinska’s ballet Les Noces is an event. Its score is by Igor Stravinsky, and the masterpiece was made in 1923, 10 years after the premiere of Le Sacre du Printemps, the harrowing modernist work Nijinska’s brother, Vaslav Nijinsky, choreographed to Stravinsky’s Big Bang of 1913. Where Vaslav’s dancers were treated like indigenous dolls, Bronislava worked her dancers like woodcut puzzle pieces. Les Noces, the story of a peasant wedding, is full of metaphorical dance tableaux and kinetic explosions. It wields a savage power, yet is also poignant, and the music is unforgettable. The program includes In the Night, three love pas de deux by Jerome Robbins, and Light Rain, a Gerald Arpino crowdpleaser. —Laura Jacobs
