Taylor Swift’s 11th studio album is here, and if I were Joe Alwyn, I’d hunker down for the foreseeable future. After announcing The Tortured Poets Department in her acceptance speech for Album of the Year at the Grammys in February, Swift dropped her characteristically cryptic breadcrumbs on social media. The first was a track list that includes titles like, “So Long, London,” and “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” (ouch). When the album finally dropped at midnight on April 19, Swift surprised everyone by releasing an additional 15 songs a couple hours later (including one that’s basically a diss track of Kim Kardashian, whom she famously feuded with in 2016). The album is pure catharsis, rage and grief and heartbreak packaged into her masterfully written lyrics, proving once again that Swift’s pain is our gain. —Paulina Prosnitz
