Published in 1963, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold was John le Carré’s third novel and first international best-seller. In 1965, the book was made into a film starring Richard Burton and Claire Bloom. Now, four years after Le Carré’s death, it becomes the first of his books to be turned into a play. Adapted by David Eldrige, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold tells the story of Alec Leamas, a disillusioned British agent who is persuaded to go undercover one last time. It’s the height of the Cold War and Leamas, played by Rory Keenan, has to orchestrate the framing of Hans-Dieter Mundt, a powerful leader in the East German Secret Service. A thriller of love and deception, the drama draws us into the existential shadowland that was le Carré’s playground. Jeremy Herrin directs. —Jeanne Malle
