“I’m not trying to make paintings look like photos,” the Scottish artist Peter Doig has said of his process. “I want to make paintings using photos as a reference, the way painters did when photography was first invented.” That technique has made Doig, at 63, one of the world’s most influential representational painters. In 2007, his painting White Canoe sold at Sotheby’s for $11.3 million. Doig was born in Scotland, but lived in Canada and Trinidad before relocating to London two years ago. The Courtauld, which closed for renovations in November 2021, marks its reopening with this show of Doig’s latest works. —Elena Clavarino
