The Lazarus Heist

Traditional warfare—tanks, spies, subs, maps, bombs, heroes—makes for great drama. Cyber warfare is much more elusive and much less sexy, and even though it is the topic du jour, few have managed to do it well. There is Alex Gibney’s masterful documentary Zero Days, which tells of the U.S. and Israel’s development of the malware worm “Stuxnet,” used to attack Iran’s centrifuges. There’s also the gripping TV series Mr. Robot, starring Rami Malek as a cybersecurity engineer by day and world-class hacker by night. The Lazarus Heist brings the thrill of cyber warfare to the podcast sphere. It recounts the epic 2014 hack of Sony Pictures, a response to Sony’s release of the satirical film The Interview, starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, which poked fun at North Korea. The hacking ring also attempted to steal a billion dollars. Talk about drama! —J.V.
