“It’s hard to think of a restaurant more synonymous with the art world than Mr Chow,” Larry Gagosian has said. Michael Chow opened his first restaurant in London in 1968, followed by Beverly Hills in 1974, and New York five years after that. Over the decades, he fed some of the biggest names in art, and many of them returned the favor by painting his portrait. Everyone from Jean-Michel Basquiat to Ed Ruscha to Andy Warhol depicted Chow in their own distinctive styles. Warhol’s 1984 portrait, which for years has hung near the desserts at the Beverly Hills restaurant, repeats Chow’s likeness across two diamond-dusted panels. Julian Schnabel used paint and broken plates, including fine china from Mr Chow itself. Gagosian has now brought together 11 portraits from Chow’s collection for a four-day exhibition in Beverly Hills; the show then moves to the gallery’s new Madison Avenue location in New York. —Elena Clavarino
