In Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’s play The Comeuppance, four friends from high school meet up to enjoy a “pre-game” before their 20th high-school reunion. They drink, smoke weed, and catch up with one another. The high-school tenure they share saw the 1999 Columbine massacre, one of the deadliest school shootings in history, and the 9/11 attacks, in 2001. As the four reminisce, Death, a surprisingly friendly figure, begins looming over the group. The Comeuppance premiered Off-Broadway in the summer of 2023, earning critical acclaim. Now it comes to London’s Almeida Theatre. —Jensen Davis
