If any mother-daughter duo was destined to grace the West End stage, it’s Imelda Staunton and Bessie Carter. And that’s exactly where they are, playing the mother and daughter Kitty and Vivie Warren in Mrs. Warren’s Profession, George Bernard Shaw’s once-banned play from 1902. Carter is Vivie, an independent-minded Cambridge graduate who is beginning her career in law and is estranged from her wealthy mother, Kitty. When Kitty makes an unexpected visit to her daughter, it’s revealed that her fortune was made the old-fashioned way—the very oldest—and that she owns and operates a brothel. Things take a turn for Vivie. Dominic Cooke directs. —Jeanne Malle
