The Clash: London Calling

Nov 15, 2019 – Apr 19, 2020
150 London Wall, Barbican, London EC2Y 5HN, United Kingdom

Even before the record needle dropped on The Clash’s third album, London Calling, released in 1979, its cover proclaimed the band’s cataclysmic intent. Photographed by Pennie Smith from the wings of New York’s Palladium theater, it showed bassist Paul Simonon smashing his Fender Precision bass against the stage in a Thor-like blur of fury and frustration. Take that! The shattered Fender is one of the sacred punk artifacts on display in the Museum of London’s 40th anniversary celebration of the double album, whose title track remains the most thrilling and summoning urban anthem ever to strike guitar glory. —J.W.
