In 1921, Somerset Maugham’s social satire The Circle premiered in London. The three-act drama unfolds over a single day and its subject is a high-society scandal: to live with her lover, Lord Porteus, Lady Catherine Champion-Cheney left her husband and son, Arnold. It is many years later when Arnold and his wife, Elizabeth, visit the socially exiled Lady Catherine. What will Elizabeth think of this woman, who traded social standing for love? The play caused a minor scandal and was booed by those who found it to be immoral. The show is back onstage in London with Olivia Vinall as the disgraced and aging romantic. Tom Littler, the new artistic director of the Orange Tree, directs. —Jensen Davis
