During the height of #MeToo, the playwright Kimberly Belflower was struck by Woody Allen’s characterization of the movement as a “witch hunt.” In response, she revisited Arthur Miller’s The Crucible—and John Proctor Is the Villain was born. “The world’s on fire, and a witch hunt has begun in Helen County, Georgia,” reads the play’s description. Set in a conservative Baptist town, it follows a group of teenage girls who come to see John Proctor not as a hero wrongfully accused of witchcraft, but as something else entirely. “I’ll often read scripts for high-schoolers or young women that are trying to connect with my generation,” says the actress Sadie Sink, “but it’s rare to find the right fit for a writer who can capture that without dumbing us down.” The comedy is directed by Danya Taymor, fresh off her Tony win for The Outsiders. —Jeanne Malle
