Considering its population is a mere five million, Ireland has produced more than its fair share of talented writers. Let’s skip Joyce, Beckett, Brennan, and Heaney, and instead focus on the present. Take your pick from Sally Rooney, Paul Murray, Claire Keegan, Paul Lynch, and John Banville, all of whom have produced recent novels that are critically acclaimed, popular, or both. The Arts Council, a national agency that funds and promotes the arts in Ireland, has a podcast focused solely on this modern fleet. It is hosted by yet another superb Irish writer, Colm Tóibín, the current Laureate for Irish Fiction. Each month, Tóibín is joined by a guest—Murray, Keegan, and Banville have all participated—for an extended conversation about their recent work and approach to writing. The talks are accessible, fascinating, and fun. —Jack Sullivan
