In 1769, the Royal Academy launched its annual Summer Exhibition—now the longest-running open-submission show of contemporary art in the world. Many of the works are available for purchase, with proceeds supporting artists and the Royal Academy’s charitable programs. Over the centuries, the show has expanded to include not just painting but also prints, film, photography, sculpture, and architectural models. This year, 1,851 works are on view, organized around the theme of Interconnectedness. The courtyard installation is by Ugo Rondinone. Newly conceived for the exhibition and titled The Song is You, it’s a 10-meter L.E.D. sign in rainbow-striped letters. —Elena Clavarino
