First introduced to Western audiences 34 years ago, the renowned Malian portraitist Seydou Keïta has a new show on display at the Brooklyn Museum. A pioneer of African photography and modernist expression—and Mali’s second-ever photographer—Keïta documented a period of great change in West Africa. His portraits, known for their multicultural aesthetics and for being deeply personal, drew sitters from all corners of the continent and the world. Curated by Catherine E. McKinley and Imani Williford, this exhibition invites viewers to rediscover Keïta’s photography through hundreds of portraits, previously unreleased images, and props. —Charlie St John
