Occupying a vacant office space in the heart of New York’s financial district, Christopher Wool’s new exhibition is a flashback to the city’s gritty underground art scene of the 1980s and 90s, when Wool first made a name for himself. Complete with graffiti tags, exposed pipes, and construction remnants, the venue is an intentional contrast to the clinical minimalism of the “white cube” galleries in SoHo and Tribeca. While Wool is best known for his stencilled word paintings (in 2015, his word painting RIOT sold for $30 million at Sotheby’s), the complex mosaic paintings and delicate sculptures featured in this show highlight the artist’s dexterity across multiple mediums. The exhibition is free and open to the public. —Paulina Prosnitz
