A number of times between 1901 and 1939, the painter Maynard Dixon traveled to Nevada from his home in San Francisco, on a mission to capture the area’s striking landscapes. His first trip there, with fellow artist Edward Borein in 1901, was on horseback; the two painted the construction of the Hoover Dam. In 1934, Dixon went to Las Vegas and painted a city in the process of formation. His depictions of Lake Tahoe and the Eastern Sierra feature evocative old homesteads, wild horses, and cottonwood trees. This historic exhibition presents 100 of Dixon’s Nevada paintings. —Elena Clavarino
