What is to be made of the title of the Jacob’s Pillow season starter? Typically playful in performance, the tap dancer and festival regular Michelle Dorrance seems to be nodding to William Butler Yeats in doomful prophet mode with The Center Will Not Hold (“what rough beast, its hour come round at last …” etc. etc.). Or perhaps she’s merely indicating the panoply of idioms featured in her latest: besides the presiding tap dance as well as hip-hop led by Dorrance Dance regular Ephrat Asherie, the premiere will slide from Detroit jit to House, Chicago footwork, Memphis jookin’, body percussion, and litefeet—pretty much anything American to do with rhythm and the body. A serious experimenter, Dorrance is a master of layering distinct idioms so that they enhance one other. With live music by her brother, Donovan Dorrance, and a cohort of 11 dancers, The Center Will Not Hold is decidedly a family affair—blood and otherwise. —Apollinaire Scherr
