Imagine knocking back a few while sitting in an art installation. In the late 1980s, Dieter Roth began envisioning a bar made of found objects. The Swiss artist was fascinated by immersive installations—and why couldn’t you serve drinks in a mixed-media magpie creation? As part of his first show with Hauser & Wirth in Zurich, Roth premiered his Roth Bar, crafted out of materials he found in the gallery. That was in 1997; Roth died the following year at age 68. But his son Björn and grandsons Oddur and Einar continued his legacy, bringing the Roth Bar to New York City, where it has lived at two separate Hauser & Wirth locations. Now, the Roth Bar returns to Switzerland, where it will be showcased at Hauser & Wirth St. Moritz alongside Dieter Roth’s 1973 painting Doppel-Selbstbildnis (Double Self-portrait). Grab a beer and enjoy the view. —Clara Molot
