The brothers Ron and Clint Howard weren’t children—they were child actors. As a youth, Ron starred in The Andy Griffith Show and Happy Days; he grew up to become an Academy Award-winning director. The younger Clint started his career in Star Trek and went on to act in over 200 shows and movies, including Apollo 13 and My Name is Earl. While they always thought of themselves as normal kids, after their father died in 2017 they reassessed things. “Who grows up on a soundstage hanging out with Andy Griffith and Don Knotts, or with a trained bear?” Ron asks. Out of this realization comes their joint memoir The Boys: A Memoir of Hollywood and Family, which focuses on their adolescence in show business and how it shaped their adulthood. The brothers will discuss the book live onstage with the producer Chaz Ebert at this year’s Chicago Humanities Festivals, on through December and offering about 100 events. —J.D.
