Robert Rauschenberg's New York: Pictures from the Real World

Robert Rauschenberg, New York City, 1983.

Until Apr 19, 2026
1220 5th Ave, New York, NY 10029, United States

This exhibition, a centennial celebration, focuses on the groundbreaking ways that Rauschenberg incorporated photography and random objects into his art. Born in 1925 in Port Arthur, Texas, he was educated at the Kansas City Art Institute; the Académie Julian, in Paris; and at Black Mountain College, in North Carolina. In 1949, Rauschenberg moved to New York City, where he studied at the Art Students League of New York and began an important relationship with the city’s gritty, jumpy energy. The show is divided into three sections: “Early Photographs,” “In + Out City Limits,” and “Photography in Painting,” and seeks to reveal the presence of the “real world” within his creations. Rauschenberg forever changed New York City’s art scene, and his work is still fresh as a daisy. —Henry McGrath
