Vivienne Westwood: Rebel—Storyteller—Visionary

Vivienne Westwood

Newgate, Barnard Castle DL12 8NP, United Kingdom

In 1970s London, Malcolm McLaren opened a boutique named after his band, Sex Pistols. Before long, with Vivienne Westwood as its designer, the shop became a landmark of street culture, dropping “Pistols” to become simply SEX. It marked the beginning of the punk movement, and in the decades that followed, Westwood emerged as a defining figure of British fashion. Westwood died in 2022. This exhibition traces her rise from punk provocateur to couturier through objects, letters, and, of course, extraordinary clothes. —Elena Clavarino
