In this centennial year of Robert Rauschenberg’s birth, museums have unrolled exhibitions that cover the many facets of the artist’s practice. The man had a hunger for freshness in his materials and imagery. “A lot of people try to think up ideas,” he said. “I’m not one. I’d rather accept the irresistible possibilities of what I can’t ignore.” The NSU Art Museum has a deep holding of Rauschenberg’s experimental prints from the 1970s, which it has combined with photographs from the early 1950s, a loan from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation. These transfers of words and pictures from newspapers and magazines allowed Rauschenberg to pull the moment into his work, but transmuted. The exhibition also includes films by Charles Atlas that capture the collaborations of Rauschenberg (sets and costumes) and Merce Cunningham (choreography)—major events in postmodern dance. —Laura Jacobs
